It’s been an entire month now. Talking about the series that I’ve been reading this summer. How time flies. When you’re reading. And re-reading. When you’re chatting about reading.

Part of the reason that I was so determined about reading series this summer is that I had set finishing some of them as a reading goal.

Last year I started making a list of the series that I’d begun, but left unfinished; once I realized that the number was edging towards 100, I realized I had commitment issues.

I remember my mother correcting me as a girl when I would leave things unfinished (from needlework projects to stories), and that’s a habit I’ve held onto. And although I’d like to be able to say that I’ve managed to correct it this year, that’s not the case.

I’m afraid that I’ve begun as many new series as I’ve finished. (And if you counted the number I’ve added to my TBR list, the fresh series would greatly outnumber the ones that I’ve completed.)

If the moniker wasn’t already claimed, I might have to change my URL to Bookslut. All the more so because I can’t even claim that my lack of devotion is due to my discerning taste. I can’t think of a series that I’ve left unfinished because I wasn’t fussed on it. I like them all, but another, freshly intriguing, is more-than-likely going to turn my reader’s eyes to its pages instead.

Some of this is purely a question of Too Many Books, Too Little Reading Time; spending too much time with one set of characters is like neglecting another set of friends simply because I’ve worn a path through the fields to another’s house.

And some of it is my personal trait of “saving”. I keep the food I love best on my plate until the end of the meal. I hate to eat the last chocolate in the box. Snail-mail letters are kept sealed until they can be enjoyed in a perfect setting. And I keep my favourite pairs of panties in the back of the drawer. As much as I desperately want to read Mockingjay, I also don’t want to say goodbye to Katniss.

But I have to admit that some of it is being a Flighty Reader. I am always looking ahead to the Next Best Book. Do you think less of me now?

Go ahead. Encourage me to Read Around.

What series do you think is un-missable?
